Abdominal Pain in Pneumonia

A Hospital Assistant asked me to see a boy, aged 10, who for the previous four or five days had complained of pain in the left lung. He had had a temperature above 100? F. throughout and had been treated with fomentations applied over the abdomen but without effect. On examination, I found that the pain was mainly in the left hypochondrium and that there was slight tenderness on pressure. Nothing could be felt in the abdomen to account for the pain; the spleen was not enlarged; the urine was high coloured but otherwise normal, and the bowels had been opened. The distribution of the pain reminded me of one or two cases of pneumonia with referred pain, which came under my care when
